God, Give Me A New Identity...Pursuing Christ Without Chasing The Wind

Yes. This is the community Tom Cat at the Aeschliman farm.  He apparently crawled into our dumpster and found some choice dining that involved a love affair with peanut butter.  Crazy.  While sporting his new attire-he crashed into buildings flopping in a futile attempt to rid himself of his newly found identity.  After awhile, he just sat still. And folks-the jar wasn't coming off no matter  how hard he tried.  We laughed at the poor critter. It was obvious that Tommy needed some outside help if he was going to ever catch the next meal.  Our daughter yanked on that jar 3 times to get the face mask off of this furry feline!! I am proud to say he appears normal and is probably busy re-populating our neighborhood. Sorry.

God has a way of giving me some fairly crazy visual aides to help me in my walk.  I guess He knows what works with me.  Apparently a dumpster diving cat with a craving for Peter Pan extra creamy helped me to understand where my identity comes from.

" Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.  In love He predestined us to the adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved." Ephesians 1:3-6

Identity.  We all chase something that will define us or make us unique so we can be different than everyone else.  WE want to matter.  Anything from personal style to public persona.  A passion.  A mission.  A calling.  A testimony.  You name it.  We chase an identity whether it is good or bad.  Sadly, sometimes the identity we find ends up making us look  just as ridiculous as this dumpster diving cat.  We dig around in the worldly dumpsters hoping for a morsel to satisfy.  We rationalize it because at least we get a taste of something.  Something that makes us look or feel better-something that numbs us to our pain.  Something yummy...and then we are stuck.  We can't move like we are meant to move.  A wrong identity gives us a dangerous world view.  Our vision is blocked and we are on a collision course with the unknown.  Unfortunately, if we keep it up long enough it could kill us.  Unless we have outside Help.

Transformation only happens when we begin to grasp the depth that Love had to go to save us. That is identity.

I walked away from Tommy with a profound thought. I can just be me. I don't need to be someone else.  I look pretty stupid when I try to find my identity in things that are a temporary fix to a permanent problem.  I was not created to chase the very things that Jesus died to save me from. I was created to chase Him.

I don't define me and I shouldn't allow the world around me to define me either. God defines me, because He knows me.

Ephesians 1:1-6

My position IN CHRIST

I am chosen.

blameless.

adopted.

loved.

accepted.

holy.

 blessed.

All because of what Jesus did for me.

My Identity is what He says it is.

And it makes me run from the dumpsters I've been digging in.

The cross brought GRACE for the real me-the broken and messy me-not some fake future version of what I think I should be. Grace for the imperfect, unpolished and unsettled and not some superwoman who has it all together.  When I run to the cross and rest in His identity for me, I find authentic faith and the real me that fits into His image perfectly.

He has the same abundant GRACE  for you as well.
