Knowing God's will. I have wrestled with that flesh eating monster more times in my life than I care to admit. The fingers of doubt and uncertainty tap on my shoulder to distract me whenever God wants to take me to the next level of knowing Him. How do I differentiate between not being in His will or is it open spiritual warfare keeping me from pursuing God's will? Do I just move forward?! During my times of wrestling and seeking there are 3 key truths that have helped me to know if the answer is from God.
1. The Bible matters. Surround yourself with Scripture!
" Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Psalm 119:105
The mind of God was written down in 66 books, so the heart of God is within your grasp if you own a Bible! If you want to know what His thoughts are in your current situation, all you have to do is pick it up and seek Him in it’s pages. Now, it is not going to come right own and say that you should move to Spokane and pursue a job at a fish hatchery! The Bible doesn’t work that way. How does it work, then? It tells you how to make wise decisions and reveals the nature and character of a God who leads His people into human flourishing. The Bible will warn you about poor choices, consequences of bad relationships, and how to move forward after mistakes. It is full of normal people just like you who are seeking God and His plans for their life. So much can be learned from their victories and defeats.
I would encourage you to get some note cards and begin writing out verses that encourage you to praise, trust, and rely on God. Choose verses that build your faith, display God's faithfulness, and encourage to you trust in His promises. Also, find a character in the Bible that is struggling in the same area as you are and spend time reading their story. Post your verses in places where you can read them throughout your day. Your bathroom mirror, refrigerator, or on your desk at work are just a few key places that would work! Keeping your mind saturated with Scripture keeps the adversary from playing games and focusing on the overcomers in the Bible will give you a vision for your time of waiting.
"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." Romans 12:2
2. Prayer matters. Secure yourself with TRUE prayer warriors!
"He who walks with wise men will be wise but the companion of fools will suffer harm."
There are those that say they will pray and then there are those beautiful people that actually do. Link arms with the mighty prayer warriors that are going to walk through this valley with you! Choose one or two godly and trustworthy women who are willing to really pray for you, hold you accountable, and to follow up as you journey through uncertainty.
" Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart." Ecc 4:9-11
3. Perspective matters. Surrender yourself and wait!
Remember that you are not just waiting on a person or a situation to change. You are waiting on the God of the Universe to move and He is Sovereign. When uncertainty creeps in, it is easy to get a laser like focus on the here and now and lose sight of what really matters. God sees your life from beginning to end, He has a plan, and it is for your good even if it hurts. I have personally gone through horrendous trials in my life, and yet I was smack dab in the center of His will. He loved me, grew me, challenged me, and used my circumstances to show me more of Him. Without those trials, my faith would be stunted. God’s will sometimes brings real pain and heartache, ya know? Knowing God’s will and direction for your life is truly a trust thing and sometimes His answer is just this…” Sweetheart, take a breath, keep your eyes on me, trust me, and wait while I am working this out.”
Take a few moments to pray over these scriptures.
"But now, O LORD, You are our Father, we are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand." Isaiah 64:8
"Your ears will hear a word behind you, 'This is is the way, walk in it," whenever you turn to the right or to the left." Isaiah 30:22
May you hear God sweetly singing over you today-and know that the LORD hears your heart as you trust in Him for direction. .
